It doesn't have its own shell, but uses other animal's old shells as protection, most frequently the shell of sea snails. As it grows bigger in size, it will finds a larger shell. As hermit crabs enjoy being in crowd, it is common to find them compete or you can say it as "fighting" with each others over the shells that they favor.

Nowadays, many people start to keep hermit crabs as pet. It is important to study its life span and other facts about housing and feeding of hermit crabs to keep them healthy.
